Unfortunately, crime is a fact of life – particularly if
you live in any large city. However, compared to other cities in the
world, Perth seems to be better than most. As a newcomer to Perth, you
don’t have the years of experience to know the good areas from the bad –
so we’ve produced a crime score for all the suburbs in and around the
Perth metro area by researching the crime rates from Oct 2004 – Oct
2005.
Suburban crime rates vary dramatically from suburb to
suburb and are dependant upon a number of factors, such as age of
suburb, number of residents, proximity to businesses/shops/nightlife
etc. Figures are publicly available for violent crime (assaults etc.),
home burglaries, other burglaries, robberies, car thefts and graffiti.
How we calculated our Crime Score
In order to emphasise the more serious crimes, we have
given each crime category a multiplier as follows:
|
Violent crime |
total amount of reported crimes for the year x 5 |
|
Burglaries(all
types) |
total amount of reported crimes for the year x 2 |
|
Robbery |
total amount of reported crimes for the year x 4 |
|
Car theft |
total amount of reported crimes for the year x 1 |
|
Graffiti |
not used |
e.g
Suburb XXX has 5 violent crimes in the
year = 25 points
plus 10 burglaries = 20 points
plus 1 robbery = 4 points
plus 25 car thefts = 25 pints
TOTAL = 25 + 20 + 4 + 25 = 74 point for
the year...
The result is a score going from 0 (no crime) to 3000+
(lots of assaults, burglaries etc.).
The Crime Score in our Suburb Browser pages is simply
there to allow you to get a feel for how one suburb compares to another
crime-wise. It certainly doesn’t tell the whole picture - as the suburb
may have a number of pubs that have late night problems, or it may be a
brand-new area that isn’t fully populated yet.
